Well it’s not a tight tie. But if you didn’t see this on facebook here is the story. In addition you can look on this site under the “Family Stories” tab. Cascara & the Malinowski’s to see just how pervasive pealing Cascara was.

Jim MalinowskiLogging Railroads of the Pacific Northwest
One year shortly after WW II my father Henry acquired the right to peal cascara bark on the old Greenwood Works (I assume still owned by Bill Boeing). He built a cabin out of six foot long cedar shakes he split from a cedar windfall near the site. He reached the site with his truck by old railroad grades, crossing two trestles he laid 2 by 6s on. The final trestle had been blown up and he set up a cable way to ferry supplies in and bark out.
He and my mother spent the summer pealing bark, camping out in the cabin. I fondly remember the week they took me with them and the experience of traveling on the old grades, crossing the trestles and passing through the remains of the logging camp which must have been this one.
Here’s what Dolores Erak & Anona remembered about that camp and Henry’s daring – –
“In fact, Henry could drive anywhere. When Anona and Henry were bark peeling at Greenwood, he’d load that Model T with bark and rip across those narrow high trestles. Dad and I would follow walking and laughing on the trestles, as the alder tops brushed our toes. The game warden was ‘chicken’ to even walk the highest trestle. Henry and Anona took my cat Mouser to Greenwood with them. The cat would climb a tree and would come down really fast after Henry peeled it.”
Anona really enjoyed that summer. “It was a wonderful summer vacation for me. Henry and I would peel the bark, and he would roll it up and pack it in, and we would spread it out on the fern tops to dry .Our campsite had a little three-sided cedar shake lean-to, with a dirt floor and powder boxes for furniture. I didn’t have to bother with housekeeping, which I loved, because I never have been much of a housekeeper. For me, it was one of the most pleasant summers I can remember.”
